LAST MONTH'S MEETING: Last month's meeting was a lecture/slide show presented by Don Gould on the aesthetics of pot shapes and selections. It 's always nice to have members share their expertise with the club, and we appreciate it, Don.
THIS MONTH'S MEETING: The February meeting will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, February 19 at the Pittsburgh Civic Garden Center. This month, we'll be doing a hands-on workshop/demo using the ever-popular "bonsai by committee" method of styling. For those of you new to the club, this is the meeting where we break up into small group to gang up, I mean "confer" on trees owned by the Society. This gives new members a chance to work at styling with more experienced members. We will be following these same trees for a few years, styling, wiring, repotting, etc. at meetings in the spring and fall. 's a great opportunity to get to know each other as well as to get your hands dirty.
SPOTLIGHT TREES: Trees you've styled and are proud of, or that you would like some advice on. (We won't use them in the workshop, honest!)
WEATHER REMINDER: If the weather looks iffy, and you think the meeting might be canceled, watch or listen to KDKA TV or radio for cancellation notices. Or call Rose Grealish. (If it's after 6:30 and no one answers, I've already left for the meeting.)
NEXT MONTH'S MEETING: The March meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 19. Our speaker will be our own Kevin Haughey who will talk about the insects that bug us and what to do about them.
BEGINNING BONSAI CLASSES Once again, Keith Scott is offering beginner classes in Bonsai open to anyone interested in learning the basics. The classes are held at the Swissvale Senior Citizens' Center in the basement of the Swissvale Public Library on the corner of McClure and Monongahela Streets, Swissvale. The classes begin on March 18, and continue through June 17. They are free to the public. You must provide your own materials.
For more information, contact Keith Scott or Evelyn Christie.MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS: At the January meeting, the club voted unanimously to make a $25.00 contribution to the Bonsai Exhibit at the Phipps in memory of members or their spouses that have recently passed away. The club will be sending a check in the amount of $100.00 in memory of members John Reihing, and Ted Zelikowski, and for the spouses of members Bob Salvatora (Blanche) and Paula Bern (Joseph).
TENTATIVE MEETING SCHEDULE 1997: For those of you that like to plan ahead, here is a list of the meetings scheduled for the year. Some of the speakers have not confirmed yet, but as soon as we have a firm commitment, I'll let you know.
