From Claudia Shields: This year's Bonsai Christmas Dinner was a grand success with good weather, good food, and good company. The mystery was solved when Keith gave a demonstration of a Zen Garden and we all had a chance to create one of our own. Everyone needs a little serenity this busy time of year. Many thanks go to those who were kind enough to donate door prizes. Ralph and Carleen Dukstein for bonsai books and pots, Victor Ciesiak for a handmade Christmas decoration, and Donna Ramsey for a lovely gingerbread house. Bird house centerpieces and a basket of pine cones were also taken home by lucky guests. Thanks to all the great helpers who made everything run more smoothly and my job alot easier and shame on the people who made reservations and didn't show up. HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Swissvale Classes are suspended until March 2001. As you may know, these free classes are conducted by Keith Scott and arranged by Anna Clark every week at the Swissvale Library located at Monogahela & McClure Avenues. Information on the start-up date and times will be in the next newsletter...
"Use what talents you possess, the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best."

Did you know that...
Herb Geissler became interested in bonsai eight years ago. "I've always been fascinated by Japanese art; and while on a plane I read an article on bonsai. That article prompted me to take a course at Phipps and now here I am!" Favorite tree: Juniper Procumbens or Shimpaku
Donna Govanucci joined in September. "Mark invited my daughter and me to be his guests. It got into my blood; and I find it fascinating."
Bob Dietz joined one year ago. "I've always liked the outdoors...the plants' and trees' shapes and structures. That's why I'm interested in bonsai." Favorite tree: False Cypress I worked on at the Swissvale classes
